Josephine Vannini was born in 1859 in the city of Rome. Orphaned at an early age, she was sent to Via Sant’Onofrio for her care and education. Josephine spent time with the novitiate in Siena, but due to her weak health she was forced to leave. Blessed Luigi Tezza asked her in 1891 if she would join him in establishing an organization dedicated to caring for people. Josephine agreed, and together they established the Daughters of St. Camillus in 1895. She was named Superior General.

Through a series of circumstances, Josephine became the sole leader of the order. The Daughters of St. Camullus received the Decree of Praise in 1922 and the papal approval of Pius XI in 1931. This congregation would grow across Europe and into Africa and South America and is still in existence today.
